The Power of Writing: An Exhibition at Hong Kong Central Library Featuring 60 of Hong Kong's Most Representative Painting and Calligraphy Masters, Uniquely Interpreting Chinese Writing Art, Connecting with the World through Art, and Demonstrating the Soft

Description
Chinese painting and calligraphy share the same origin and have accumulated over a thousand years of excellent cultural and artistic traditions, serving as an important means of passing down Chinese culture. Since ancient times, the unity of painting and calligraphy, their shared principles, and their interconnectedness have been important topics in traditional Chinese art, and Chinese artists throughout the ages have continuously explored these concepts. The artistic languages of painting and calligraphy are closely linked, with painting within writing and writing within painting, inspiring creative artistic attempts that are both rooted in tradition and daring in their breakthroughs.
To coincide with the Chinese Culture Festival 2025 and actively leverage Hong Kong's advantage as a Center for Cultural and Artic Exchange between China and foreign countries, the Power of Writing exhibition, hosted by the Hong Kong Members Association of the China Literature and Art Association (Hong Kong Federation of Literary and Art Circles) and co-organized by the Hong Kong Members Branch of the Chinese Artists Association, will be grandly held at the Hong Kong Central Library from July 25 to 31, 2025. The exhibition aims to showcase the latest developments in Chinese writing art in Hong Kong. Through the artists' creative integration of writing and painting, the exhibition will display the techniques of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, including brushwork, line, composition, rhythm, layout, and space. It will also provide an in-depth deconstruction and reflection on traditional and contemporary calligraphy arts.
The exhibition will bring together 60 of Hong Kong's most representative painting and calligraphy masters, who are also sociologists, educators, writers, doctors, poets, cartoonists, entrepreneurs, collectors, designers, theater directors, painters, calligraphers, and seal carvers, among other professions. They have not only achieved remarkable success in their respective fields but also continuously pursue innovation in Chinese writing art. The over 100 pieces of artwork on display strongly reflect the times and embody Hong Kong's characteristics, covering various media such as calligraphy, ink painting, oil painting, sculpture, installation art, and technological art, allowing visitors to appreciate the subtle relationship, modern expressions, and unique interpretations of Chinese painting and calligraphy, paying homage to the long cultural heritage of Chinese painting and calligraphy, and hoping to convey the power of China's millennia-old writing art to more people.
During the exhibition, seminars, artist demonstrations, and guided tours will be held to enhance the public's appreciation skills and broaden their horizons regarding Chinese writing art, helping them understand the similarities and differences in the application of Chinese calligraphy and painting techniques, and thus gain new insights into Chinese writing art. A special hands-on experience area will also be set up on-site for the public to experience the process of painting and calligraphy, fostering cultural confidence.
You are cordially invited to attend the opening ceremony and media preview of The Power of Writing exhibition. The curators, Lin Tianxing, Rong Haoran, and Zhao Zhijun, along with the exhibiting artist Lin Mozi and others, will share their insights on the uniqueness, diversity, and influence of contemporary Chinese writing art in Hong Kong, analyze how Hong Kong leverages its advantage of connecting with the world through art, and showcase the country's cultural soft power on the global artistic stage, contributing to the inheritance and development of Chinese culture.
